House and Senate Voted to Extend U.S. Patriot Act

Yesterday, the U.S. Senate approved a one year extension of the Patriot Act, and today the U.S. House of Representatives also passed the extension of the Patriot Act by a vote of 315 to 97.

MSNBC and the Associated Press reported, "The outcome is a major disappointment for Democrats and their liberal allies, including the American Civil Liberties Union, who believe the Patriot Act fails to protect Americans' privacy and gives the government too much authority to spy on Americans and seize their property."

According to Fox News, "Many lawmakers wanted to rewrite or even kill some of the most controversial provisions in the act. But Congressional leaders didn’t have the appetite for a major battle with the economy and health care reform swinging in the balance. Many of the renewed provisions involve wiretaps and eavesdropping measures."
